Born and raised in the South Bronx, Jimmy's life was a little less than perfect, but he wasn't going to complain about it; "Remember there is always someone worse off than yourself", he was taught. The Montero family's financial status was the main cause for their problems. His mother, Anne, was unemployed, so spent her days at home worrying about what to prepare for dinner. His father, the "Lord of the Manor", or simply Jorge, was an abusive booze-addled construction worker who ran the household with an iron fist. He was hardly ever at home, though, spending most of his life at work trying to generate an income for his family and then trudging off to the pub to trade his worries for drinks. When he eventually did rock up at home, tensions usually ran a bit high; Jorge, because of the embarassment of coming home to the people he wanted to but couldn't support, Anne because she was generally a tense person, Jimmy because as the eldest son his father had high expectations of him, most of which he was just barely able to meet, and Diego simply because at the time he was the youngest and easiest to pick on.
Apart from Jimmy's somewhat disgruntled homelife, he spent the bulk of his childhood getting up to mischief and wrecking havoc in the community with his brother and their little "gang". None of it was serious, of course, mostly it was just a bunch of silly pranks children like to play on the people they don't like, or they would do things to annoy or freak out the adults, such as holding on to the back of a speeding bus while on their bikes, clambering over rooftops or puncturing the wheels of teachers' cars.
The next few years was a bit of a mess and went by in a daze. April the 23rd saw the birth of Jimmy and Diego's sister, Lucy. Anne was delighted about having a baby girl, but Jorge wasn't too happy; more children meant more mouths to feed and less money. His drinking hadn't gotten any better, either, and now his boss was threatening to fire him if he didn't sort himself out soon. Jimmy made a promise to himself that when he was old enough he would quit school and get a job somewhere for extra cash so he could support his parents and keep the old man off his back. And that is exactly what he did. When he turned 16 he dropped out of school and began patrolling New York in search of work. Work found him soon enough. A man in suit and tie approached him one evening with a small parcel tucked under his arm. He called Jimmy to somewhere quiet, explained what he was looking for and asked him if he was up for the job. "Just follow my lead and son I'll make you a millionare." he said with a swanky Wall Street smile. Jimmy took the job without any questions.
After a couple of deals, Jimmy had already made a fair chunk of money from his new job. In context with a lot of other occupations it may not have been very much at first, but it sure was a hell of a lot more than he had expected. He took the money home and gave it to his father. So the routine continued for the next few months and it was going well, but after a while curiosity got the better of him. If people were willing to pay an absolute fortune for this stuff, it had to be good. When he was on another of his errands, he carefully opened the parcel and took one of the baggies for himself, neatly wrapping the parcel up again just before the customer arrived. By then his boss had increased his share of the money to 10%, earning him a good $100 per deal and ultimately about $400 a week. Jorge was amazed at his son's income, if not after a while a bit suspicious. Of course when he found out Jimmy was selling and using cocaine he beat the crap out of him.
It was around then that Everything fell flat on its face and hell breached the barricades. Jorge was fired from his job and his quarrels turned violent. Anne had up 'til then made sure she didn't get herself involved in any of their disputes, refusing to let her idealistic view of the perfect close-knit, hard-working family be shattered. But a year later she drew the line when Diego, then fifteen, ran away from home with not a word to anyone but to his brother on where he was going. Anne filed for a divorce, and when she and Jorge were officially no longer married, she and the remaining kids packed their things and left for the airport for the first plane to Tropico. Jimmy was disorientated by the all the sudden change for a while thereafter but nevertheless relieved, so after a few hours of waiting he boarded the 747 with 8 bags of cocaine strapped around his waist. Soon enough the plane was rumbling down the runway until it was in the air and on its way to Jimmy's new life. Codeword: -admin edit-
